5 Simple Steps to Boost Your Immune System

The only way to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to follow the measures put in place by our government, including social distancing and proper hygiene practices like frequent hand washing (over 20 seconds). 

However, keeping your immune system healthy year-round is always a good idea! We’ve put together five simple ways you can boost your immune system.


1. Laughter is Key
Laughter is one of the best ways to boost your mood! While the act of laughing is an instant pick-me-up, there are actually long-term effects on your physical body. Laughter can relieve pain, reduce stress and improve your immune system. It’s a good time to catch up on watching comedy specials or getting in touch with that particular friend that always knows the funniest things to say.


2. Take Care of Your Mental Health
Chronic stress can definitely interfere with your immune system and keeping a good outlook is important for your health. It’s not a usual thing to live through a pandemic and have to be in isolation without in-person socialization so make sure to take care of your mental health along with everything else. Spoil yourself, reach out to family members and friends, and consider online therapy. It is absolutely okay to ask for help if you’re struggling or generally feeling in a lower mood.


3. Nourish Your Body
The nutrients you get from food are essential for your body to function at its best. Your immune system needs enough zinc, folate, iron, Vitamin C, and other micronutrients to work. It might be tempting to go for the junkier food right now, but make sure to nourish your body with lots of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. If you’re spending all your time inside the house, it might be a good idea to ask your doctor about adding a Vitamin D supplement to your daily regimen. Make sure to hydrate with water, too!


4. Keep It Moving
Staying active and getting enough exercise plays a large part in keeping your immune system working at its best. Regular exercise helps lower your risk of developing chronic diseases that work against your immune system (like obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and heart disease). You’ll also naturally reduce stress levels, which is always a huge bonus!


5. Get Enough Good Sleep
There is a strong link between your immune system and getting enough restorative sleep. More specifically, your body works its magic when you’re asleep. While you sleep, your body produces all the good stuff that keeps your immune system intact. As well, getting enough sleep means that you will have enough energy to follow the other tips on this list! If you’re exhausted, it will be difficult to get the motivation to cook a meal or go for a jog.
