While there’s a time and a place for a barbecue that would delight committed carnivores, why not try something a little different? Although grilled fruit won’t replace burgers and hot dogs as a main course, it’s a very worthy side. We put together this guide for grilling produce to enhance its flavour (and help you make the most of grilling season).
1) Watermelon + Grilled Fruit Skewers
Grilled watermelon might sound weird, but we promise it’ll be the star of your cookout. Simply slice a medium-sized watermelon and brush both sides with olive oil, then place the slices on the grill over medium heat. You’ll know they’re ready when grill marks appear – about two to three minutes per side. Remove the watermelon from the grill and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper, then cut it into cubes and sprinkle with feta (to taste, although we prefer to be a little heavy-handed when it comes to cheese) for a sweet and savoury summer salad.
We also like to make watermelon skewers. We use a Melon Baller for perfect, uniform balls. Alternate between a watermelon ball and cube of halloumi for grilling.
Get this trendy piece of produce fired up! Use an Avocado Slicer to halve and de-pit your avocado, then drizzle with lime juice and brush with olive oil. Place it face down on the grill for three minutes or until the green fruit gets grill marks. Sprinkle the cooked avocado with salt, pepper, and more lime juice to taste. This is perfect to eat on its own as a snack, but the combination of creamy and smoky flavours is also a welcome addition to any salad or burger.
When it comes to grilling pineapple, it’s all about the baste (and marinade). We used our Pineapple Slicer to create rings, and then used this recipe. The result? The most perfectly caramelized grilled pineapple, probably ever. The tanginess of the pineapple is complemented by rich, sweet flavours from the brown sugar. We like these grilled treats as a side or dessert at summer cookouts. They’re also good with ice cream (you’re welcome).
Although these are three of our favorite grilled fruits, the list certainly doesn’t end here- we also love grilling stone fruit (peaches and plums), bananas or plantains, and even kiwi.
